Economists who know what they’re talking about

Every month I write a column for Moneywise Magazine called Join The Dots.
I pick somebody newsworthy and explain what their words or actions tell us about markets.
Next month I’m going to choose an economist who knows what he’s talking about, probably Nouriel Roubini (See this profile in this month’s Finance & Development, an IMF magazine.).
He’s famous now for predicting in 2005 and 2006 that a real estate crash would case banking failures and a deep recession.
My theory, by no means proven, is an economist who was right once, might be right again.
Roubini is particularly easy to follow because he has a blog. He’s chairman of RGE Monitor, a company that provides economic analysis, and Professor of Economics at New York University. He, or somebody in his office, tweets too!
Judging by the blog, and recent headlines like: Reflections on the latest dead cat bounce or bear market sucker’s rally, Bernie Madoff is the Mirror of a Made-Off Ponzi Economy, and How Low Can the Stock Markets Go? Much Lower, he’s still pessimistic.
Other candidates:
- Robert Shiller, but I’ve done him many times.
- Meredith Whitney, the banking analyst who pulled the rug out from under the banks.
Doubtless there are many more, but I’m most interested in economists that warned of crisis before the credit crunch gathered momentum.
