Multiple browser windows with new authentication

A few users have mentioned they can no longer launch more than one browser window without having to login again, which subsequently logs them out of the original window.

This is due to the new window being launched via the IE icon on the desktop or start menu rather than opening a new window from the original browser itself. Launching a completely separate browser instance creates a new win32 process which does not share session / cookie information with the original one. This is by design and is beyond our control.

In short, you can launch as many windows as you like by selecting “File” from the top menu bar in your browser and then “New”, “Window” (or CTRL+N as a keyboard shortcut).

I, like millions of other people, do not use IE, or any other MS product if I can help it since in my opinion they are relatively unreliable and insecure. I use Opera, which in my opinion is faster and more responsive. Also, by avoiding MS products I get far, far fewer viruses and spam emails. It would be so nice if website designers would recognise this.

Unfortunately, your IE based website does not display properly in Opera. The vertical advertising panel on the right hand side sometimes obscures the site content. Can you fix this please ?

    Thanks for your feedback Philip.

We have always tried to take a position of neutrality in terms of browsers and recognise there are many out there. Opera is one of the browsers we do testbench with and I have raised your points as bug 2220 internally for our team to look at again.

For info, here’s our current browser usage stats across iii.co.uk (July 1st to November 28th 2005) :-

    IE6 - 80.13%
    Firefox - 6.06%
    IE6 (AOL) - 4.63%
    IE5.5 - 2.54%
    Opera8.x - 2.08%
    IE5.0 - 1.35%
    Safari - 1.04%

Just to say thanks for taking this up - this greatly enhances the reputation of your site in my opinion.

    Hi
I use Firefox, and have noticed a problem with your new login system.
I never log out from a session, instead I just close my browser.
About 1 in 5 attempts to login result in a message saying that I have been logged out as a previous browser session is still open, when there is no other browser window open.

I really would like a remember me/ keep me logged in option, as your new login is really putting me off III.
