Stock exchanges of the world

If you spend your days pondering market moves in London, New York and Tokyo you’re probably missing out on a whole world of stock exchanges :-)

Inspired by the emergence of Africa as a target for investment, here’s a photo taken by Stephen Eckett on a recent visit to Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange, photo by Stephen Eckett

It’s the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange in Tanzania, home to the listings of ten East African companies.

Having lived three years in Tanzania, I sampled the wares of Tanzania Breweries, though not Tanzania Cigarette or Tanzania Tea Packers.

Vices apart, I’ve passed the giant cement works on the road to Bagamayo many times too. It’s probably owned by Tanga Cement or Tanzania Portland Cement, both listed on Dar’s exchange.

Stephen, a businessman, writer and private investor, is considering investing in sub-Saharan Africa. The easiest way, he thinks, would be through a western company with operations there, although it would be interesting to call a UK broker to see what they make of an order for Tanzania Breweries.

Most western companies operating in Africa are miners, though there are others he says. Lonhro, for example, is listed in London, and so is his favourite company for African exposure, PZ Cussons.

Rub away the soapy veneer of a dull old detergent company and Cussons, which makes Imperial Leather, could turn out to be an African gem. It’s rewarded shareholders well enough in recent times.

Meanwhile, back in the wider world of stock exchanges. A quick search of photo-sharing site Flickr reveals this shot taken on a tour of Kuwait’s Stock Exchange. According to the photographer it’s a bit busier than Dar es Salaam’s:

We then went to the stock exchange floor, now that place was huge and just totally packed with people. The shot I took only shows a third of the floor, since I am using a fixed 50mm lens I couldn’t zoom out to show you more. This floor is where all the action takes place according to our guide, he told us this is where you can find people dancing or people fainting. He told us last week there were ambulances lined up outside the stock exchange building because when the stocks went down badly so did a lot of people.

In fact, there is a quite a collection of pictures of Kuwait’s exchange on Flickr.
