The One?

At times I look to movie quotes for inspiration - although don’t get me wrong, I don’t walk around the office saying “Beam me up Scotty”.

This morning we put our new database live - the end (although as it turned out just the beginning) of a project which has been painful at times and admittedly caused a few performance problems in previous aborted attempts. How could I best sum up our challenge?  Well, perhaps this line from the Matrix:-

The Oracle: Everything that has a beginning has an end. I see the end coming, I see the darkness spreading. I see death… and you are all that stands in his way. If you cannot stop him tonight, then I fear tomorrow will never come.

or to put a relevant spin on it:-

The DBA: Everything that has a beginning has an end. I see the end (of this product’s life) coming, I see bad things happening. I see the site crashing… and we are all that stands in its way. If we cannot get this live tonight, then I fear a lot of angry users.

So yes, quite a bit of pressure to get this done and has lots of effort from our DBA and infrastructure guy to get us to where we are this morning. Things may not be perfect, Oracle (that’s the database, not the woman who sees in to the future) has a huge amount of tuning and configuration variables - some of which ‘auto-tune’ and some we’ll need to tweak to get optimal performance.

So, bear with us if the site is a little slow this morning. It had to be done and there’s no easy way to do it.

Update: 10.25

Yep, another Oracle bug found….and we’ve had to back out.  Most frustrating. Sincere apologies for the outage this morning.  I’ll be taking the CEO to meet someone senior at Oracle…I think we’ve been too nice for too long now.

Still trying to get to a suitable level at Oracle to discuss our 10G upgrade pains. I thought I was on to something when Mark and I met Mike Workman of Pillar Data Systems, a Larry Ellison backed venture. Great guy, great lunch; but he couldn’t promise me a meeting with Mr Ellison on his yacht.

Shame, I’ll try the Oracle Service Request route again.

Take it from me you will never get to speak to anyone senior at Oracle regarding install issues. We are considered goafers, go for this and go for that. Senior managers at Oracle will not even give you a response, thats life, its the same at all large organizations. If a senior manager at Oracle were to deal with your problem then they would have to employ about 2000 of them.
