Webcasts - A pain in the ar**, surely ?

Congratulations to MoneyAm on launching their new ‘Market Report’ webcast service today.  Judging by the closing report I watched this evening, it looks like they’ve put a lot of thought and effort in to the production - I particularly liked the intro sequence.

Before I get fired for praising the competition, allow me to go off on one.   Producing Internet television is of course relatively easy these days; but what should never be overlooked is the huge commitment placed on the individuals presenting and no doubt the techie guy who subsequently has to encode and upload…..twice a day at fixed times every single business day.  No more nipping out to the pub , no more oversleeping, and those chaps behind Simon Keane are going to have to behave themselves for two and a half minutes every single time that red light goes on…..

It’s something I admit to trying and failing at during my stint at Interactive Investor South Africa.  I sat our editor in front of our video conferencing camera and recorded it on to a PC before uploading it for, oooh, about 20 people to watch. Sure, access to a wide audience let alone broadband was and still is a challenge across South Africa so I could always blame the timing.  But no, in the end I think we gave up because every now and then a glass of wine in a beach side bar just seemed more tempting than trying to inform a financially savvy internet audience what they probably already knew by 5pm.

Anyway, it got me thinking that perhaps we could offer an alternative style of video market report.  If people want to see something then lets give them something splendid to look at; however lets do it in a way that doesn’t interfere with anyone here being able to watch the World Cup in a month or so.

The basis of the new beta product is nothing new - Virtual Avatars.  Combine one of those with a script that fetches out all the ’cool stuff’ from the website that day and I think we’re on to a winner.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I proudly introduce the beta version of the “Interactive Investor Market Report” (codename: Picasso). In this scene, our presenter touches on an issue raised on the bulletin boards about the dreaded pop up ;)
